Satellite RENTAL
Who rents satellite phones?
Executives going on holiday to remote locations who
need to be contactable or who want to stay in touch. If its hunting in
remote N.Z or some other remote corner of the planet or big game
charter fishing -an Iridium or an Inmarsat satellite phone provides
the answer.
Who else?
Consultants, aid workers, exploration workers,
telecommunication workers and many others traveling to remote parts of
the globe. Services include voice, fax and data at speeds from 2.4
kbps to 64 kbps depending on the equipment.
TV and radio reporters covering a story in a remote
location can file the story with broadcast quality audio and digital
video, utilizing Inmarsat's latest high speed data equipment called
the Nera World Communicator plus, special hardware and software to
compress the file.
What are the advantages of using a satellite phone?
It will work almost anywhere, providing you have line
of sight. It is completely independent of the local telecommunication
infrastructure available. Iridum coverage is truly global. Click here
for the Inmarsat Mini-M and M4 coverage map.

What is this "line of sight"?
All satellite phones need line of sight to operate.
This usually means the satellite phone (or antenna) must be located
outside to send or receive a call. In certain cases they will work
inside buildings (with large clear glass windows), provided the
windows are facing the right direction with a clear and unobstructed
view of the sky.
Can you call any telephone?
Yes, cell phones, landlines, other satellite phones,
home, your office, any phone.
What are the disadvantages of satellite phones?
Briefly - size, weight, line of sight and cost.
Iridium satellite phones are walkie talkie size, Inmarsat phones are
laptop size -weighing approximately 2.4 kgs for the Mini-M, to 4.5 kgs
for the World Communicator.

How do I pay for the rental satellite phone?
Your rental cost will be debited from your credit card
(in case of individual customers) on delivery of the rental satellite
phone. Call charges will be debited to your credit card on a monthly
basis. Corporate customers will issue a works/purchase order for all
relevant charges.
Is own insurance required for a rental phone?
Insurance is required. The party renting the phone is
obligated under our rental agreement to pay us the current value if
they do not return the phone or if it is damaged. You may insure the
phone yourself, just ask us for the current value. Alternatively we
can insure the phone for you from NZ$5/day plus GST with an excess
from NZ$450.
What are the rental charges?
Current rental charges range from NZ$ 25 a day
depending on the equipment and customized configuration of optional
accessories with call charges little more than roaming on a cell
phone. Normal period is for a month, less than a month by negotiation.
Conditions
Damaged equipment will be repaired or replaced at the
Hirer's expense. You must let us know straight away (within 24 hours)
if it becomes lost or stolen so that we can limit your exposure to
call costs incurred by any other person.
The term "any destination" means a call terminating on
a landline or PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) phone, i.e. an
ordinary telephone or cellular phone. Rates for calls between
Satellite phones are much more expensive. Please ask us about these
call charges if you might be using this service. Rental period shall
start from the time of collection or delivery and end once the phone
is returned to Cynotech Satellite.
